Tripura: Bru bodies alleged ‘illogical Interference’ in Bru Customary Laws Codification

Tripura, Sept 28-2020: The prominent Bru organization Bru Socio Cultural Organisation (BSCO) along with Bru Mothoh (Council of Kaskau and Rai of the Riangs) in a joint press conference stated their dissatisfaction on the allegedly illogical interference of a politically influenced organization of Brus in customary law compilation.

Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous Council has already passed the Bru Customary Law and thereafter the codification of the Laws had been processing under the state Government. On July The State Government passed this to Tribal Welfare Department to review the matter and formed a nine member review committee citing contradiction and lapses on the codes.

The Bru bodies alleged,” that this is very sad that with the help of one influential BJP MLA, an organization of Brus-Bru Songrongma, which has no authority to make suggestions or do improvements when it comes to customary law, is trying to influence the system.”

The BSCO and Bru Mothoh also objected the Tribal Welfare Department’s action inviting public suggestions and Kripajay Reang of Bru Mothoh, one of the empanelled members of the Bru customary law review committee, alleged that with But, ironically, with the help of MLA Ram Pada Jamatia, Bru Songrongma submitted a separate set of customary law to Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb. The Songrongma is completely a religious organization and deals with the traditional worship related issue, he added. 

The organizations also alleged the Customary Law Committee of flouting all the sections of Bru customary law and using it for its own purpose.
