Shillong: Traffic has come to a standstill as some parts of the National Highway (NH) 6 near Sonapur village in Meghalaya have caved in following the landslides caused by incessant rain.
Since the highway has been damaged in several places, the regular movement along the highway have disrupted and commuters have been advised to avoid taking the route.
Speaking on the matter, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) officials said that efforts are on to clear the blocked route, and apart from this necessary assistance is also being provided to stranded passengers.
According to a report by NDTV, the authorities are presently allowing only restricted movement along the highway, which connects Southern Assam, Mizoram, Tripura, and parts of Manipur to the rest of the country.
Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, the East Jaintia Hills police said, ”Landslide on NH06 near Sonapur Village. Another landslide occurred on NH06 near Sonapur village this morning. Commuters passing through this route are advised 2 please be patient as efforts are already on 2 clear d same.”
Both Meghalaya and Assam have been hit by intense rain, floods, and landslides this year, leaving several people displaced.
