Imphal, June 04 2022: Women Action for Development (WAD) secretary Sobita Mangsatabam has urged the MLAs of the 60 assembly constituencies of the state to pledge to the people not to house criminals in their respective constituencies to prevent increasing cases of crimes against women and children.
A public meeting on ‘Violence against women and children in Manipur’ was organised jointly by Chandapur, Chingmei, Keibul, Sagram Apunba Club Meira Paibi and WAD at Keibul Lamjao Chingmei Keinya Bazar on Saturday.
Speaking on the occasion, WAD secretary Sobita Mangsatabam noted that the 60 MLAs of the state could play a key role in preventing crimes against women and children.
As such, she suggested to the MLAs to show that they are sincerely representing the people by pledging to prevent such crimes from happening in their respective constituencies, while also seeing that justice is served in the said cases by helping to apprehend the culprits involved.
Urging politicians not to try to cover up crimes against women and children, the WAD secretary also urged all concerned against settling the cases behind closed doors.
The police should also take up necessary legal action in such matters, she said, while demanding the government to separate the police personnel who are meant for maintaining law and order and those who are meant for VIP duty.
She also urged for resolving all pending cases.
Stating that it is the responsibility of each one of us to think of the future generation, Sobita stressed the need for local clubs and Meira Paibi associations to take a more proactive role so as to prevent such crimes from happening.
There is also the need for spreading awareness among the children and for parents/guardians to be more vigilant, she stressed.
Integrated Rural Development Centre secretary M Sundari, Rehabilitation Centre Langol project manager Phamlia Tuithong, and Chronicle News Service journalist Liklaileima also attended the meeting as speakers.
Later, a rally was taken out in Keibul Lamjao Chingmei Keinya Bazar area.
