Imphal, June 07 2022: A village chief of Naphai village in Kangpokpi district was reportedly shot dead by unknown assailants last night at about 11.50 .
The deceased has been identified as Zilhem Khongsai (57) .
He was the chief of Naphai village near Molkon Bazar.
According to credible sources, the Naphai village chief was summoned from his home by some miscreants who shot him dead a few metres away from his residence.
It is reported that the village chief had alerted one of his relatives while passing near her house.
A few moments later, a gunshot was heard and when the villagers rushed to the spot they found the chief lying in a pool of blood and breathing.
The village chief was then taken to CHC Saikul but the doctors there declared him brought dead, the source added.
According to the doctor, the bullet hit his left chest near the heart and exited on the right side of his back.
As per the source, the injury mark is not suspected to be caused by an automatic weapon.
A case has been registered at Saikul police station.
Later, Saikul police deposited the body at RIMS morgue.
None have claimed responsibility for the killing till the time of filing this report.
