Manipur: Including Minors 16 Arrested in Cybercrime case

IMPHAL: Police have arrested 16 people including three minor members and admins of a WhatsApp group and a Facebook page which uploaded indecent photos and videos of girls on the social media.

Detailing media persons about the arrest during a press conference Thursday, Imphal West superintendent of police (SP) Dr S Ibomcha said that Imphal police station and Cyber Crime PS registered one each FIR on June 12 after receiving report that indecent photos and videos which amount to outraging modesty of girls were being uploaded on social media particularly on a WhatsApp group and a Facebook page. The report received by police mentioned that Facebook page ‘Kanglei Imagi … Nupising’ with admin named Yumnam Piba uploaded indecent photos and videos of girls. During the course of investigation, police came to know that members of the Facebook page (Kanglei Imagi … Nupising) used to send and share indecent photos and videos of girls including minors through a WhatsApp group.

Accordingly, Imphal police station started investigation against the WhatsApp group by registering another FIR. During the course of investigation, admin of the WhatsApp group namely Kanchui Mangkung (27) son of Jonathan of Sorbung village, Kamjong was arrested from New Checkon on June 14. On further investigation, police arrested members of the group Konjengbam Arunkumar alias Franki Gaming (29) of Kwakeithel Lamdong Leikai, Victor Sorokhaibam alias Ngongo (28) of Singjamei Mayengbam Leikai, Khuraijam Surjakanta alias Dhoko (28) of Singjamei Chinga Mathak, Soibam Singhajit (28) of Singda Kadangban Part 1, Oinam Nanao (33) of Top Moi- rangkampu, Thokchom Lanchenba (18) of Lamboikhongnangkhong Emoinu Shanglen Leirak and three other minor boys.
Upon receiving the same report from both the Facebook page and WhatsApp group, Cyber Crime PS registered another FIR and started investigation. During the course of investigation based on the FIR, police initially arrested Konjengbam Krorchandra Khaba (27) son of Ibotombi Khaba of Kongkham Makha Leikai Ward No. 8 and Abujam Satyajit (27) son of Manaoton of Changagei Mamang Leikai. Later, police picked up Elangbam Birjit (26) of Irilbung Kalika, Aribam Bony (34) of Keishamthong Ahanthem Leikai, Mingchatlen Laishram (22) of Wangkhei Tokpam Leikai, Angom Roshan
(28) of Sekmaijin Thongam Leikai and two minor boys, Dr S Ibomcha added.

Social media is a good platform if used in the right way, Dr S Ibomcha said and appealed to people particularly youth to take benefits from it rather than misusing it to the extent of causing self-destruction and dishonouring the society.
