Manipur: IED Explosion Leaves One Dead, Four Injured

Imphal: A suspected improvised explosive device (IED) exploded inside a Community Hall at Sapam Mayai Leikai in Khongjom village of Thoubal district in Manipur on 30 May. The blast resulted in the death of a person and four others incurring severe injuries.

As per police reports, the deceased happened to be a labourer who hailed from West Bengal. All five labourers were involved in the construction of a water tank at the community hall.

A police officer said that Pankaj Mahato (21) from Khariatabad succumbed to his injuries at the Thoubal district hospital.

The labourers from West Bengal were asleep in the community hall at the time of the explosion that occurred in the Khongjom area.

The injured were evacuated and were immediately rushed to the Thoubal district hospital for medical treatment. The injured have been identified as Aroop Mandal (30), Souvik Patra (18), Apoorva Mondal (25) and Rajesh Ramaanik (19).

The spot where the explosion took place has been sealed by the Thoubal police for forensic inspection.

A case has been registered in connection to the incident.

Earlier this month, a powerful bomb, detonated by remote control, rocked Manipur’s Imphal East district, partially damaging four cars, police said. This was the second blast within a day in the same district.

Police said that the blast took place at around 3:15 am near the residence of RK Virendra in the Khurai area.

“Since the blast occurred early in the morning, luckily, no casualties have been reported,” a police official told the media.

Police had suspected that the miscreants had planted the bomb over a dispute over contractual government works and no group had claimed responsibility for any of the two blasts.
