Illicit Poppy, Ganja cultivation in hill districts; Police Dept, Chiefs of 80 villages holds meetings

Imphal Sept 24-2020: The ongoing Awareness Campaign against illicit poppy and ganja cultivation and drugs in Manipur, which started last Tuesday concluded on Thursday at 1st M.R. Banquet hall.

Altogether 80 Village Chiefs and representatives attended the session, during which there was a fruitful discussion on the topic.

The Village Chiefs and representatives who attended the program were from the Villages of Senapati, Kamjong, Chandel, Tengnoupal, Churachandpur, Ukhrul and Bishnupur Districts.

The meeting which was chaired by DGP L. M. Khaute, IPS, was also attended by other senior police officers, namely, ADGP (Int.) Ashutosh Kumar Sinha, IPS; IGP Zone-II Clay Kongsai, IPS; IGP Zone-III Lunsieh Kipgen, IPS; IGP Zone-I K. Jayanta, IPS; IGP (Int./NAB) K. Radhashyam Singh, IPS; DIG R-I and R-II Themthing N., IPS; DIG R-III Angam Romanus, IPS; DIG R-IV K. Kabib, IPS; SP/Ukhrul Ningshen W., IPS; SP/Senapati Pradeep, IPS; SP/Tengnoupal Vikramjit Singh, MPS; SP/NAB W. Basu Singh, MPS; SP/Bishnupur Priyadashini Laishram, MPS; SP/Kamjong Ningam Siro, MPS; SP/Chandel Madhunimai, MPS and ASP/Churachandpur Shivanand Surve, IPS.

During the meeting, wide-ranging strategies and issues were discussed for containment of illicit poppy and ganja cultivation and drug menace in the state. The Village Chiefs also reiterated their stance against poppy cultivation and proposed for alternative crops to replace poppy.

The meeting has clearly demonstrated willingness of both the public and the police to fight this drug menace together.

While highlighting the current drug and illicit poppy cultivation in Manipur, the DGP appealed to the conscience of the gathering to put in sincere efforts jointly for the sake of the future generations. The Village Chiefs were requested to submit plans for alternative cropping/means of livelihood to their respective SPs for onward submission to the government.
