Guwahati: In an unfortunate incident, a cancer patient reportedly committed suicide at the North East Cancer Hospital and Research Institute (NECHRI) in Guwahat’s Jorabat.
As per reports, the deceased identified as Padma Chetri, who was a resident of the North Lakhimpur district.
Chetri terminated himself by hanging on the ceiling fan of room no. 201 of the hospital. However, the reason behind the suicide is yet to be ascertain.
A team of Jorabat police reached the spot as soon as the news broke out from the hospital and launched an investigation.
It is important to know that, National Crime Records Bureau lists various causes of suicide like career or personal as well as professional life, sense of isolation, abuse, mental disorders etc. and states a 10.0% increase in the number of suicides happened in 2020 since 2019.
In 2020, as many as 1,53, 052 suicides cases were reported from the various states like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Karnataka.
A figure studied from the report of ‘Accidental Deaths & Suicides in India 2020’ of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) says 3243 suicides occurred in Assam in 2020 which ranges between 2001 to 10000.
Delhi reports significantly about 3142 number of suicides. The NCRB also states that a total of 23,855 suicides happened in 53 mega cities in India in 2020.
Family problems and illness were found to be major causes of suicides.
