Gauhati High Court Seeks Detailed Report From Assam Govt On Eviction Drive

Guwahati: Terming the incident which took place in Darrang district of Assam during an eviction driver as a sorry state of affairs and a ‘big tragedy’, the Gauhati high court on Thursday has asked the BJP led state government to file a detailed affidavit on the eviction drive.

During hearing a PIL filed by the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Assam assembly, Debabrata Saikia and a suo motu petition taken up the court in the matter, the court has asked the state government to file the affidavit with three weeks.

Saikia in his prayer has sought the court to put a stay on the eviction drive and to direct the state government to provide compensation and to follow rehabilitation norms.

The high court also asked whether the state government believed that the National Rehabilitation Policy was not applicable in Assam and directed it to file a detailed affidavit in the matter within three weeks.

Meanwhile, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Bhupen Kumar Borah welcomes the decision and action of Guwahati High Court for responding positively to the PIL filed by ACLP Leader Debabrata Saikia and taking up sou motto the matter of the tragic incident of the death of two persons by police firing during the eviction drive in Dholpur village in Darrang District by Assam Government.

APCC stands vindicated that Guwahati High Court has said – ‘it was a unfortunate incident – a tragedy’ and that ” blood had been spilled on the ground’. APCC had condemned the incident in strongest terms and APCC President had led a protest march in Mangaldoi and a delegation of Congress leaders had also submitted a memorandum to the Governor of Assam.
