Assam: CM Himanta to visit Nimati Ghat today; PM Modi, Amit Shah, Sonowal enquire About The Incident

JORHAT: The chief minister of Assam Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday has said that he would visit the Nimati Ghat in Jorhat on Thursday where about a hundred passengers sunk after two boat collided with each other in the river Brahmaputra.

The incident is said to have taken place in Jorhat’s Nimati Ghat, which is about 350 kilometers from Guwahati. Of the two boats, one was a government passenger ferry that belonged to the Inland Water Transport department and the other was a public boat. The government ferry was coming from Majuli while the other boat was moving in towards the opposite direction.

According to the report, the incident took place at around 4 pm.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that all possible efforts are being made to rescue the passengers.

Soon after the incident, the chief minister Sarma said that the incident has ‘pained him’ and informed that he has directed Majuli & Jorhat administration to undertake rescue mission expeditiously with the help of NDRF and SDRF.

He also informed that home minister Amit Shah has talked with him to enquire the matter.

In meantime former chief minister of Assam and current Union Shipping & Ports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal called chief minister Sarma to enquire about the incident.

Anguished to learn of the ferry accident in Majuli. I have talked with Assam CM Shri @himantabiswa regarding the accident and he has informed me of ongoing rescue and relief operations.
