A Senior NSCN-KK rebel leader arrested by Assam Rifles joint operation with state police

Guwahati: Assam Rifles, in a joint operation carried out with the state police, on Sunday apprehended a self-styled ‘revenue and political officer’ of the NSCN-KK near Jongji Havi in Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh.

Based on specific intelligence reports regarding the presence of a senior rebel leader belonging to the proscribed group being in Jongji Havi village, the team launched an operation and apprehended the militant, defence PRO P Khongsai said.

The apprehended person was later identified as SS Captain Hangnong Pangtha.

It is suspected that the individual on behalf of his group was involved in forceful extortion activities from locals, contractors and government officials operating in Tirap, Changlang and Longding districts of south Arunachal Pradesh, the PRO said.

The apprehension of the rebel leader has brought much needed relief to the PSUs and locals of Changlang who have been facing the brunt of extortion. The apprehended individual has been handed over to Changlang police station for further investigation.
