Karimganj police unearth tunnel used by militant

SILCHAR: Investigation into a fiery brawl between two cousins over a land dispute at Binodini in Karimganj’s Nilambajar led the district police to a surprise success as it unearthed a 50-metre long tunnel. Further, the police found that the person arrested for firing at his cousin had links with Naga militants. On Tuesday police made a further raid at the area. The 50 metre long tunnel, reportedly used as safe storage for firearms as well as a hideout for criminals, was built amid deep jungle over the top of a hillock near Saphala, a small village near Binodini. Nilambajar police recovered a cache of firearms and live cartridges.

On Sunday police arrested one Abul Hossain who fired at his cousin over a brawl over a land dispute. But the interrogation of Abul led to a bigger surprise for the police. Abul and his gang were involved in the murder of a fish trader in 2015. Subsequently, he developed a link with a Naga militant outfit. Some pictures of Abul carrying sophisticated machine guns were also recovered.
